Solar-powered Streetlights Come to Virginia
Charlottesville, Va. – Streetleaf, a solar streetlight company, is bringing clean energy to Virginia sidewalks— installing 27 solar-powered streetlamps in Greene and Frederick Counties.
“[There’s] no reason that they can’t be powered 100% by renewable energy that’s more effective and cost effective,” said Liam Ryan, CEO of Streetleaf discussing the implementation of solar streetlights. “Not only that, it’s reliable.”
Four of the 27 lights installed are in Greene County, with the remaining 24 in Fredrick.
Ryan says the installation offers a much-needed update to traditional infrastructure.
“Streetlights are one of those things nobody really thinks about, they haven’t changed in 50-100 years,” Ryan described.
Ryan says the solar-powered lights are off the grid, alleviating traditional installation and energy costs while providing a reliable source of light during power outages or emergency weather.
“We’ve actually seen people out at night playing under the lights, having a picnic, having dinner, because the entire community is dark,” Ryan said. “It actually kind of brings people outside under the light where that’s the only light in the community after a big storm, so that’s really the resiliency and the severe weather impact that we’re seeing.”
Streetleaf says its first Virginia streetlights are set to reduce carbon emissions by 2.77 tons a year.
